One of the biggest fears of love is falling out of it… You go to a restaurant and see a married couple sitting silently across from each other and staring out into the distance with a glazed expression. Um, can anyone say DE-PRESSING?! It’s hard to believe that couple was ever in love to begin with! This couple needs to rekindle the romance. Enter – Norma Jean Martine, who does a beautiful job of this in her song, “Have I Told You?” Influenced by artists such as Carole King and Norah Jones, Martine brings a sultry sound to this soulful R&B song. The production is absolutely killer, and hearing the BGV’s live would bring even more soul to the song (which it already has plenty of!). Dylan Morris, who co-wrote the song with Martine, says the song is about the rejuvenation of “love between lovers who may have grown jaded from love.” If you or somebody you know needs a relationship pick-me-up, this song is for you!

Sway – MYMP
This is one of my favorite love songs to listen to when I’m by myself – usually on a drive home after a long day. Even though the message isn’t completely harmonious and care-free, the swinging melody will instantly put you at ease. Some love songs make you hurt, but this one oddly makes me smile. The singer is asking her love interest to say he’ll stay, because she can’t be cured of him. The lyrics are not very uplifting:
Somehow though, knowing that you want someone is half the battle. Having no qualms about being with the other person is almost as freeing (if not more) as having your love reciprocated. MYMP gets that, I think.
1+1 – Beyonce
Some might say that recent developments in pop music have taken out romance and replaced it with robotic, fist-pumping party anthems. Beyonce’s “1+1” is the exception to that new rule. Bringing the soul and romance back into love songs, Beyonce says she doesn’t know much about certain things, but that doesn’t matter if she has love.
If I ain’t got nothing, I got you
If I ain’t got something I don’t give a damn
Cause I got it with you
I don’t know much about algebra, but I know 1+1 is 2
And it’s me and you
That’s all we’ll have when the world is through
Make love to me
When the world’s at war
Let our love heal us all
Right now baby
Make love to me
Poison & Wine – The Civil Wars
You’re in for a treat. This love song and the video are pretty intense. Poison & Wine is an anthem of love on the brink of being lost. The chorus that’s repeated over and over again is almost a denial:
Oh, I don’t love you
But I always will
I always will
Anyone who’s parted ways with someone can probably relate. So enjoy, because they explained the way we all feel through song!
