Every good hipster knows the genius of Ben Gibbard’s music catalog. The lead singer of Death Cab For Cutie has a knack for metaphorical devices and all the other things a good lyricist should be good at. The song “I Will Follow You In The Dark” strips down love and humanity, and what it means beyond this world. The test of true devotion is following a person to the ends of the earth, no matter where it may lead.

Sway – MYMP
This is one of my favorite love songs to listen to when I’m by myself – usually on a drive home after a long day. Even though the message isn’t completely harmonious and care-free, the swinging melody will instantly put you at ease. Some love songs make you hurt, but this one oddly makes me smile. The singer is asking her love interest to say he’ll stay, because she can’t be cured of him. The lyrics are not very uplifting:
Somehow though, knowing that you want someone is half the battle. Having no qualms about being with the other person is almost as freeing (if not more) as having your love reciprocated. MYMP gets that, I think.
Good Feeling – Violent Femmes
The Violent Femmes are beloved by 80’s and 90’s kids everywhere, and their song “Good Feeling” stands out in their catalog of music. The song has enjoyed a resurgence of popularity after being featured on the hit sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” in a pivotal episode, introducing this simplistically beautiful song to a new generation. While the melody is a little typical of grunge music, the way the lyrics and the melody combine feels unique and personal. The heartfelt plea comes across in a few words:
Good feeling
Won’t you stay with me
Just a little longer
It always seems like you’re leaving
When I need you here
Just a little longer
So whether or not you were alive when the song came out, this is a good one to listen to when you are holding onto something or someone that always seems to be just out of reach. We can all relate to that!
Save Me From Myself – Christina Aguilera
When you hear the name Christina Aguilera, some intense belting/girl power anthem probably enters your mind. Although known for her vocal acrobatics, Christina brings it down for the heartfelt love letter that is “Save Me From Myself”. A message of thankfulness and hope, she thanks the man she loves for putting up with her on her worst days. Even on the days she fought him, his love triumphed and has a grace-giving element to this troubled woman. Whether or not you’ve found a romantic love, we all know the healing power that comes with unconditional love from another human being. This beautiful, melodic song is a celebration of that.
Poison & Wine – The Civil Wars
You’re in for a treat. This love song and the video are pretty intense. Poison & Wine is an anthem of love on the brink of being lost. The chorus that’s repeated over and over again is almost a denial:
Oh, I don’t love you
But I always will
I always will
Anyone who’s parted ways with someone can probably relate. So enjoy, because they explained the way we all feel through song!
St. Patrick’s Day – John Mayer
We’ve featured John Mayer before, and we’re about to do it again. And why not? John wears his heart on his sleeve and puts all the complexities of love on display. St. Patrick’s Day is an ode to genuine but temporary love. No one wants to be alone on major holidays when companionship is celebrated. It’s only when St. Patrick’s Day comes around that the pair finally faces their problems and go their separate ways. Why wait when you know it’s not going to work out? Well, as John puts it, no one wants to be alone at Christmas time.
